  • The histrionic 1965 melodrama “A Patch of Blue” stars Sidney Poitier as a young man who befriends a young blind woman (Elizabeth Hartman) over the racist opposition of her prostitute mother (Shelley Winters, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her ridiculously shrill and violent performance). It was reissued this week on DVD in the four-disk Sidney Poitier Collection. Though the film is forgettable, it gave rise to one enduring work of art: a jazz recording (released soon after the movie itself) of themes of from the composer Jerry Goldsmith’s score for the film by an unusual and venturesome quartet, led by the vibraphonist Walt Dickerson and featuring the manifold, mysterious Sun Ra on piano and harpsichord. Their performance, on a disk called “Impressions of a Patch of Blue” (long out of print, but available from Amazon as an MP3 download), is a high point of modern jazz. Dickerson (who died last year—our memorial note is here) plays vibes as John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy played saxophone—with astonishing whirlwind flurries of notes and jolting harmonic leaps-and Sun Ra’s chordal interpolations, halting melodies, and quizzical arpeggios open abysses of wonder beneath them.

  • Sidney Poitier's films of the 1950s and '60s almost always put a statement about race in the forefront, and even when the message was obvious, his work as ambassador across the race divide made a big difference. This sweet tale of a possible romance across social barriers came at a time when interracial pairing was still illegal in some states. Poitier is his sweet self, but the film was stolen by young Elizabeth Hartman, a major talent with a tragic life story.

  • Thanks to Nancy my afternoon's ironing was an entertaining task as I watched A Patch of Blue, I think the correct way to describe my ironing was being stood there with an iron in my hand glued to the screen, not much actual ironing got done until afterwards. I'm a sucker for a love story, especially a subtle one, which this most certainly is. What I need help with is the end of the movie, nothing was wrong with Nancy's timing he movie just clicked off. I got to the point where the school bus had pulled up and he had something to tell her but she interrupted and told him how nice and beautiful he was an the she knew he was a negro, he looked really touched and he asked her how she knew, then my screen went blank. Can somebody help me? Did she get on the bus? Did he find out about the beating at the hands of her mother? They do have a future don't they?
